Changing Your Surname

01.12.2015

Today, 90% of women make the traditional choice and take their husband's surname. The choice is reported in the Certificate of Incapacity to Marriage, which we fill in at the Office, at the same time deciding what surname the children will take.

Currently, 90% of women opt for the traditional choice of adopting their husband's surname. This decision is recorded in the Certificate of Marriage Eligibility, which is completed at the Registry Office. Simultaneously, this decision also determines the surname their children will carry.

Traditionally, this is a matter for the bride to contemplate, as a change of surname by the groom remains a rarity.

There is no obligation or recommendation for changing surnames, which leaves us with three distinct possibilities:

☆ The bride may retain her maiden name.
☆ The bride may adopt her husband's surname.
☆ The bride may use a combination of both surnames.

Currently, 90% of women opt for the traditional choice of adopting their husband's surname. This choice is recorded in the Certificate of Marriage Eligibility, filled out at the Registry Office. This document also simultaneously decides the surname their children will bear.

It is advisable, after marriage, to send official notifications to companies, individuals, agencies, organizations, and banks. Additionally, it's important to update official documents such as identity cards, passports, and driver's licenses. Some organizations may request a copy of the marriage certificate, which is issued post-wedding. It is recommended to simultaneously report both the change of surname and, if necessary, a change of residence.

But what happens in the case of subsequent marriages?
This may result in yet another change. If a woman has retained her surname from her first marriage, she will likely want to adopt her new husband's surname in the second marriage. Undoubtedly, it would be meaningful for the new husband if his wife is recognized by his surname and not another man's. Children from the first marriage will likely carry their father's surname, while the mother may continue to use her maiden name or adopt her new husband's surname.

Addressing the matter of changing surnames is entirely the decision of the engaged couple.
